Jul. 23rd, 2008 08:02 pmTo speak of souls in a more definable sense, one must first understand the terms of what a soul truly is. It is the essence which drives Man. It is not their thoughts, or their emotions - those are something more body-related, and the body is only a third of what Man truly is. Just as one can sell their body, and it soon becomes a wreck, so too can one sell their soul and it becomes a shattered, crumbling thing, decaying and frayed at the edges.
To take that analogy a step further, consider a soul as a stone fence. After many years, that fence will have undergone extremes of heat and cold, dryness and rain. It will become weathered, but still sturdy.
But not even stone can be a force against corrosive elements such as highly concentrated acid. The soul is a thing, pure and untainted at first, but once it is brought up against the forces of Evil, that wall starts to break down, and crumble, as if it withstood hundreds and hundreds of years of decay at once.
For me, a soul is nourishment, sustenance. I can eat food, but it only fills my stomach. Without a soul to call my own, I must fill myself with others' as a temporary solution to an eternal problem. Just as vampires need blood to continue to move and live and thrive, I need souls to continue to have that drive that so many prefer. I don't know about this particular version of reality, but what I do know is that in my reality's Hell, souls are used to continue that force. They're like coal or solar energy or wind power down there. Fuel to our needs.
Unfortunately for you, dear reader, you cannot replenish your soul. You've got but one. It's not like blood in that it's constantly being produced and reproduced. And it's something like a delicate glass dish; once cracked, it can never be returned to its former beauty.
